Tondra Madruga Death Obituary - Tondra Miller Found Dead After Alcatraz Boat Sinking

Tondra Madruga Obituary, Death – The tragic sinking of the Volare in San Francisco Bay has claimed another life, as authorities have identified Tondra Madruga, also known as Tondra Miller, among the victims of the devastating boating accident that unfolded during a memorial gathering.

Her death has added to the heartbreak surrounding the July 14 tragedy, which left multiple families grieving after what was intended to be a day of remembrance turned into a catastrophic maritime disaster.

According to authorities, the 49-foot cabin cruiser Volare was carrying approximately 20 passengers—primarily family members and friends—who had gathered to honor the memory of a loved one. The vessel departed from a San Francisco Bay Area marina before traveling beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and toward the waters between the bridge and Alcatraz Island.

At approximately 3:35 p.m., the boat encountered trouble and ultimately capsized, prompting an extensive multi-agency search-and-rescue operation involving the U.S. Coast Guard, the San Francisco Police Department, local fire agencies, and other emergency responders.

Sixteen people were rescued from the water, with several requiring hospitalization.

Authorities initially confirmed the death of Clifford Joseph Boisa, 79, while three additional passengers remained missing as rescue crews searched the bay for survivors.

On Thursday, July 16, the San Francisco Police Department announced that officers searching the waters west of Treasure Island were alerted by a passing vessel to a body floating in the bay.

Officers recovered the individual from the water, and the person was pronounced deceased at the scene. Following notification of next of kin, the victim was identified by multiple news organizations as Tondra Madruga, 58, who was also known as Tondra Miller.

Following confirmation of her identity, Tondra’s family released a heartfelt statement expressing both their grief and their compassion for everyone affected by the tragedy.

“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved mother, daughter, sister, and aunt. Our hearts remain with every family impacted, and we sincerely appreciate your kindness and understanding.”

Their words reflect not only the profound loss experienced by their own family but also the shared sorrow of all those whose lives have been forever changed by the boating accident.

Those who knew Tondra remember her through the many important roles she fulfilled throughout her life. She was a devoted mother, a cherished daughter, a loving sister, and a caring aunt whose presence brought comfort, strength, and love to those closest to her.

As family and friends continue to mourn, they are choosing to remember her for the compassion she shared, the relationships she nurtured, and the lasting memories she created over the years.

The accident remains under active investigation as authorities continue working to determine exactly what caused the Volare to sink.

Before Tondra’s body was recovered, the U.S. Coast Guard announced that it had suspended its active search for the remaining missing passengers after covering more than 1,200 square miles of water.

Captain Jared S. Toczko acknowledged the emotional difficulty of making that decision, extending condolences to every family affected by the tragedy.

Investigators have indicated that some passengers may have been inside the vessel when it sank, noting that individuals were believed to have been both on the main deck and below deck during the emergency. Authorities continue efforts to recover the wreckage of the Volare, believing it may provide important information about what led to the fatal incident.

The tragedy has deeply affected communities throughout Northern California and beyond, with many expressing sympathy for the families who gathered simply to honor the memory of a loved one before the day ended in unimaginable loss.

As investigations continue, officials are urging patience while they complete the recovery operation and examine all available evidence surrounding the sinking.

Funeral and memorial service arrangements for Tondra Madruga have not yet been publicly announced. Her family is expected to share those details when appropriate.

Although her life ended under tragic circumstances, Tondra Madruga—also lovingly remembered as Tondra Miller—will be remembered not for the manner of her passing but for the love she gave as a mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and cherished member of her family.

Her memory will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched and the enduring love she leaves behind.

May Tondra Madruga rest in peace, and may her family, along with every family affected by the Volare tragedy, find strength, comfort, and healing in the days and months ahead.
